Data is the single biggest enabler of a decarbonised, decentralised and digitised energy future. It’s the tool that will bridge the gap between where we are now vs. where we need to be to achieve net zero.

Enabling open-sourced energy data

As part of the £103 million prospering from the energy revolution ISCF, last year we launched the Modernising Energy Data Access competition, designed to enable energy data to be open-sourced for the benefit of society.

We want the enduring solution to support more agile regulation, more informed policymaking, and prompt an exponential increase in new apps, products, propositions and microservices.

Meet our winners

Following a highly competitive battle for the three winning slots, today we are announcing the competition winners (Icebreaker One, Electron and Siemens). From 1 June, they will enter a 6-week discovery phase to tease out the requirements for their solution.

Phase 2 will see the list of companies reduced to two and an Alpha prototype developed over 3 months. Phase 3 will then see a single winner go on to build the Beta solution over a 6 month period concluding in mid-2021.

This competition forms part of the Modernising Energy Data initiative across BEIS, OFGEM and Innovate. We are a small team of passionate individuals committed to enabling open data and supporting consumers, business and society to accelerate their journey towards Net-Zero.

Icebreaker One

Icebreaker One have their roots in open banking and will deliver a project called Open Energy. Open Energy has the potential to both transform the energy industry and address the climate crisis via economic innovation, accelerating decarbonisation.

Their project will develop an open standard for data sharing in the energy sector. On implementation it will enable energy network and market stakeholders to share data robustly, legally and securely, driving the use and adoption of innovation across the energy sector.

Electron

Electron will deliver a project called ContainER. It will create a data-coordination platform that enables industry participants to discover and access data that is mastered by the most suitable data owner.

The project is based on the principle of integration and coordinating existing datasets that already exist across the industry using modern distributed system architectures to facilitate this.

Siemens

Siemens’s project aims to deliver a digitally integrated modern energy system that supports a common data architecture concept.

Underpinning their vision is an implementation of an open data platform, constructed upon the requirement of the users and employing a sector-specific metadata standard to drive commonality, enabling data exchange.

The next phase

We are very excited about all the projects and wish the winners the best of luck. Please join me in welcoming them to the ISCF programme.

We would very much welcome input from all stakeholders throughout the discovery, alpha and beta phases to ensure user needs are captured.

Please do register for the stakeholder launch on 1 June. You can watch the webinar here. The password to access the webinar is 2K@H04=9.
